2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Release

September 26, 2017
Sam Smith Harvest

September 2017

Greetings,

We are nearing the end of what has been one of the most unusual—to put it mildly—harvests we’ve ever seen in our 46 years on top of Spring Mountain. There has been rain, there have been enormous swings of temperature, and we’re not quite done yet. Short version: it’s a smaller crop and we’ll know more once all the fruit is harvested.

We are now releasing the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon!
There’s a lot to celebrate with this wine. We had an

abundant crop in 2014 and given the drier winter, berry sizes were smaller and had more concentrated flavors.

It’s elegant and stylish; a French friend the other day called it ‘nervy.’ It’s a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet franc and 7% Merlot and spent 18 months in 70% new French oak and 30% one-year-old French oak. You’ll taste our mountain terroir in the wine: the nose is full of dark fruit, boysenberry and plum. The palate is remarkably seamless, a deliciously integrated mouthful with a velvety, silky texture. We find this wine perfume-like: it’s the flavors and aromas of Cabernet Sauvignon ‘distilled’ into an essence of Cabernet. Old school and old world in its approach, it delivers finesse, grace and balance. It’s superb now, with a lengthy finish. This wine will certainly age wonderfully for at least twenty-five years.

We’re celebrating our 46th anniversary with a terrific tasting and get-together on October 7 from noon to 4:30 p.m. It was 46 years ago when Stu founded what today is Smith-Madrone … he first walked through what was then a very remote and heavily forested property, and saw its potential, with its various slopes, deep-red Aiken soil and high elevation. You’ll have a chance to enjoy and purchase wines you normally wouldn’t taste during a visit to the winery, including library wines and large format bottles of Cabernets. This memorable day on the mountain will also include tastes of fermenting fresh juice, great food, lively live music and, of course, our unparalleled views out over the floor of the Napa Valley.

This open house is for our mailing list customers only. Tickets must be purchased in advance; you can buy them here.

2017 Releases

Look for the release of the 2012 Cook’s Flat Reserve in early October and the release of the 2015 Riesling and 2015 Chardonnay in November. The 2014 Riesling and 2015 Chardonnay are slipping out the door…so this might be your last chance to purchase those before they’re gone.

Have a wonderful fall and we look forward to seeing you again,

Stu, Charles and Sam
